چکیده

During recent years attention has been drawn to the isolation of starch-fermenting, gelatin-liquefying corynebacteria from acute cases of sore throat (Jebb, 1948; Saxholm, 1951). Fourteen strains have been isolated in this laboratory between January, 1946, and June, 1951, 12 from acute tonsillar infection, one from the throat of a symptomless carrier, and one from a lesion on the hand. In addition, a further 31 strains from other laboratories have been investigated by one of us (W. H. H. J.). With the decrease in the number of cases of gravis diphtheria these 14 strains formed a considerable proportion (35%) of all starch-fermenting corynebacteria isolated in this laboratory during the last five years (Table I). The strains can be distinguished from C. diphtheriae both biochemically and because they produce two toxins, only

The isolation and characterization of bacteriophage active against the diphtheria-like corynebacteria.

In recent years there has been an increasing number of reports concerning the isolation of starch-fermenting, gelatin-liquefying corynebacteria from acute cas of sore throat and from healthy contact carriers (Jebb, 1948; Saxholm, 1951; Cook and Jebb, 1952; Henriksen and Grelland, 1952). These organisms, which have come to be known as the diphtheria-like corynebacteria (DLC), have been character...

Bacteriological & epidemiological characteristics of diphtheria cases in & around Delhi -a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Diphtheria infections caused by the different toxigenic biotypes of Corynebacterium diphtheriae are endemic in Delhi. Information on biochemical identification, toxigenicity and antimicrobial susceptibility to this bacterium is scanty. This retrospective study was carried out to identify isolated Corynebacteria biochemically, determine their toxigenicity, drug sensitivity...

A non-starch-fermenting variant of Corynebacterium ulcerans.

Recently a non-starch-fermenting strain of C. ulcerans was isolated and a strain which did not hydrolyse urea when first isolated has also been discovered. For full identification of C. ulcerans both intradermal and subcutaneous tests in guinea-pigs are required, and it is recommended that these tests should be carried out with all organisms which culturally and morphologically resemble diphthe...

Biochemical characters and antibiotic susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus isolates.

OBJECTIVE To observe the biochemical characters and antibiotic susceptibility of isolated Staphylococcus aureus (S. auerus) strains against some conventional and traditional antibiotics. METHODS Thirty post operative pathogenic isolated S. aureus strains were used in this study. Bacterial culture was done in Mueller-Hinton broth at 37 °C. Characters of these strains were determined by traditi...

Identification of low-molecular-weight compounds inhibiting growth of corynebacteria: potential lead compounds for antibiotics.

The bacterial genus Corynebacteria contains several pathogenic species that cause diseases such as diphtheria in humans and "cheesy gland" in goats and sheep. Thus, identifying new therapeutic targets to treat Corynebacteria infections is both medically and economically important. CG2496, a functionally uncharacterized protein from Corynebacterium glutamicum, was evaluated using an NMR ligand-a...
